The human voice is the most powerful sound in the world. That’s Julian Treasure’s claim in his TED talk called How to Speak so that People Want to Listen. The sound expert talks about how to use your voice to sound more confident, credible and engaging whenever you speak.
I am most in agreement with his advice about voice register and silence. When you use your lower register, or speak from your chest rather than your nose, that deeper sound resonates with your audience – gaining their attention and respect.
Silence is a vocal tool that’s often overlooked. When you use short pauses between statements, you give yourself time to think and your audience time to absorb. Silence truly is golden. Watch his 20 minute talk, it’s worth your time.
